So, once every month and a half or so, I have to staff the Library computer lab on campus. It’s part of working for the computer services area on campus for work study. Most of the saturdays that I have to work are really quite easy. I just sit and do homework or play on the internet and listen to my ipod (w/ one ear open so that I can hear people if they need help).
Today though, I have this lady who’s a non-conventional student… well nor am I being that I’m 10 years older than most of the students here. But she’s just old. ha. But anyway, she came into the library computer lab and wanted to watch a video that an instructor had linked through blackboard. (For those of you that don’t know, Blackboard is an online instructional tool that some of our instructors use to being contact with students outside of class). Well, the instructor provided a website that contained videos about something that they’re learning about in their class – the link going to a pbs.org website. Well, that’s all fine and dandy. The website worked, but the videos that were supposed to be on the page were not there. It was like when you go to a website and the picture that’s supposed to be there isn’t? And all you see is a little “X” instead of the photo. Well, it was doing this with the videos she was needing to watch.
Well, that’s all fine and dandy, but what she couldn’t grasp is that I wasn’t able to fix that. How do you explain to someone that doesn’t understand how computers work that the instructor was just linking blackboard to the pbs site and that I had no control over the pbs site. To me, it looked like the site had taken down the video’s, but left the page up. So, it looked like you would be able to view them, but in reality, you can’t.
On top of that, when she called me over to ask me to help her, she took a phone call while sitting there and proceeded to talk on the phone for nearly 5 minutes. Leaving me to stand there w/ my thumb up my ass. I mean seriously. #1. You’re in a library. Silence your phone. #2. If you’re going to take the call step outside of the library. #3. If someone is helping you, you don’t answer the call right then.
It’s just a matter of respect. And since you’re old, you should know what respect is. I just had another old lady on the phone in here too. Just as I was typing. And her voice carrying so much that I swear that the whole library could hear what she was saying. It’s absolutely ridiculous. The rules are here for EVERYONE, not everyone except you. Well, I’m off to go have a talk w/ her now about the library rules.
Peace out bitches.
